The usability test report outlines my observations of a campus walking tour that was given and designed to lead participants in an enjoyable experience. It outlines some of the areas in which the process could have been improved, some of the strengths of the process, and some concluding thoughts on the execution of the process.
Overall, things went smoothly with the walking tour. People were pleased, and for the most part, the process went off without a hitch. As with any process of this nature, there were things that could have been improved in order to create a better experience. From my perspective as an observer of the process, I became acquainted with some of the ways the process could have been potentially improved throughout my process of observing.
The test was on time, which was one of the biggest concerns coming in. In addition to that, things went mostly smoothly. This was expected, given that there should not have been too many issues with this particular process. People were generally clear about what was going on, and the communication was solid. One of the strengths was the overall level of detail. Whenever people are being put through a walking tour of this nature, there has to be a specific level of detail so they know what is going on. The primary strength of this process was that people were given plenty of information on what was going on. This information almost bordered on being overwhelming, but ultimately it was just enough.
There were also good observations made about the reality of the surroundings. By noting that some things in the environment are “strange,” the process can be aided and people will have a better sense of where they are and what is going on. This may seem like an unconventional approach to take, and surely it is a subjective judgment that was made, but it helped to aid in the experience of the walking tour.
One of the issues came with the hallway letters inside of the building. I messed up on these letters. This is where the process itself was a little bit difficult to follow. Because the instructions gave out so many different numbers, things got a little bit confusing. People can only remember so much, and the numbers were actually quite long in some instances. This caused me to have some problems with my recall and it made things more complicated and difficult than they needed to be. In the future, one might need to take into account the capabilities of people in remembering these things, especially when numbers are long and they can run together. This could cause confusion and cause people to get lost at the end of the day.
I also felt confused at times within the buildings and within the library. While things went generally well, it was not pleasant feeling as if I was lost for some portion of the time. I wanted to have clearer direction on where I was so that I could better enjoy the process and feel more at ease.
Opportunities for Improvement
There are a few areas where improvement might be possible and even necessary in order to facilitate a better process. Ultimately there could have been better maps and directions given out within the buildings and the library. Buildings can tend to get confusing, as all of the doors and hallways look the same. With better direction and a map within these buildings, I would have had a better sense of where I was and what I was seeing, adding to the experience in a significant manner.
